ReadingThru: Psalm 102-104

Today’s Reading: Psalm 102-104

It is intersting how some Psalms seem to resonate with contemporary Christians, while others go largely unquoted and unknown. From Psalm 103, I recognized verses using in a couple of songs and a couple that are often quoted. Psalms 102 and 104 don’t seem to have quite that level of popular recognition. Since we can be sure that David didn’t somehow missed the mark and the scriptures are not somehow less inspired, I can envision that there is a time or place or circumstance for some individual or people where these Psalms speak - just like Psalm 103 does to so many Christians today.

ReadingThru: 1 Chronicles 7-10

Today’s Reading: 1 Chronicles 7-10

Today’s reading sees an end to the genealogy lists and rejoins the books of Samuel with a synopsis of death of Saul. It’s noteworthy that Chronicles puts the fault for Saul’s fall squarely on his failure to follow God’s command and his consulting a medium. Seems like a pretty good example of sins of omission and co-mission back to back.

Today’s Reading: Psalm 81, 88, 92-93

How great are Your works, O LORD!
Your thoughts are very deep.
A senseless man has no knowledge,
Nor does a stupid man understand this:
That when the wicked sprouted up like grass
And all who did iniquity flourished,
It was only that they might be destroyed forevermore.

Sometimes I get a little frustrated with the advancements and apparent victories of the wicked and ungodly… The Psalmist calls them senseless, stupid, and wicked - I can’t argue.

Another big list of names, in this case the priestly line from Levi.

ReadingThru: Psalm 73, 77-78

Today’s Reading: Psalm 73, 77-78

Three long Psalms.

Unlike the “Songs of Ascent”, here are some examples much longer Psalms. Even though they are wordy, they express some simple ideas:

  1. The wicked are decieved if they think they are getting away with it. (Psalm 73)
  2. If God came through before (and He has), He will again. (Psalm 77)
  3. God doesn’t lead because we follow - He leads because He is God. (Psalm 78)

Today’s Reading: 1 Chronicles 3-5

More genealogies.  It is interesting how God includes little glimpses into some the lives we go whizzing past, maybe not enough for a full character study, but just enough to remind us that these were real people with real lives and that they were a part of His plan.

Today’s Reading: Psalm 43-45, 49, 84-85, 87

More Psalms:

Vindicate me, O God, and plead my case against an ungodly nation;

In Psalm 43, the writer is asking for deliverance, not from some over due bills, or a head cold, or some people that don’t appreciate his choice in faiths, but from a whole, ungodly nation and and it’s deceitful leader! Not trusting God with the everyday things seems kind of silly when you compare yourself to this Psalmist, who is not only willing to ask, but expecting God to make defend him against a nation.
