Chris,

Cool story about you and Wendy. Thanks for sharing that. Love your comment about how music speaks to the heart. I think for the first time, I really saw that when I read your post. I've heard it a thousand times but always just put it in that cliche category and moved on, but when you wrote it, I thought about it a lot more literally. Thanks!

Ethic of reciprocity? Hmmm...seems like I heard that somewhere before. Good stuff! I love the "leave them hanging" approach at the end of today's devotional.

It was sooooo good to have you and Wendy here tonight at cell...you and Wendy really add such an awesome dynamic, and cool & wise input. Wow!!!! It was great to have people really contribute tonight the way they did. I think Kristina got to ask only 2 questions!

Thanks, Chris, for all you and your family contribute to God's work at Elim and throughout God's kingdom!!!

I think that "practical joke" might be a little mild. It is more likely they started out grumbling against Joseph, their grumbling turned to anger and outrage as Joseph approached. They made big threats among themselves, but lost steam when it really came time to act on those threats. Reuben moment of conscience ( or at least fear of the consequences ) may have helped to bring a small amount of sanity to mob mentality.
If you look at Jacob's prophecies over his son's as he lay dying, you get a good sense of how Jacob saw them (the brothers) - impulsive, self-absorbed, prone to violence and rage.

What do you think, please, of Obadiah Shoher's interpretation of the story? (here: samsonblinded.org/blog/genesis-37.htm ) He takes the text literally to prove that the brothers played a practical joke on Yosef rather than intended to murder him or sell him into slavery. His argument seems fairly strong to me, but I'd like to hear other opinions.

How easy it is to find myself in the same shoes as those Jewish people...after God has set me free, has given me eternal life, filled me with His Spirit...to sometimes have crises of faith.

Good word...thanks!
